Passionate about water polo? Looking for an opportunity to help shape Winnipeg’s newest and biggest Water Polo Club?

Vortex Water Polo is looking for dedicated and motivated individuals to continue building and implementing high quality recreational and competitive water polo programming in Manitoba.

In November 2021, Neptunes and Bushido water polo clubs formally merged to create Vortex Water Polo.  The goal of merging the two long-standing Winnipeg clubs was to streamline pool times, increase the base of athlete across all levels of programming, consolidate human resource capacity (coaches, Board of Directors and volunteers) with the objective of growing the sport and providing increased game play opportunities.

To help achieve this goal, Vortex Water Polo is building a team of energetic and committed individuals with a passion for water polo to promote, expand, and strengthen water polo in Manitoba.

Vortex Water Polo is looking to bring on three (3) individuals for the fall 2022 season:

  1. Technical Director (full time)
  2. Head Coach- Women’s Programming (part-time)
  3. Head Coach- Men’s Programming (part-time)

We are looking for individuals who:

Position: Technical Director (full time)

Location: Winnipeg, Manitoba

Competitive annual salary of up to $40,000 (cnd)- commensurate with experience

Preferred start Date: August 15, 2022

The Technical Director reports to the Vortex Water Polo (VWP) Board of Directors and is responsible for the direction and development of players, coaches, and coaching programs for the Club. In so doing, the Technical Director will create a sustainable system that provides coaches with support while also ensuring the progressive development of VWP athletes.

Key Responsibilities Include:

Liaison Role

  1. Attend VWP Board of Director meetings as a non-voting member.
  2. Work with the Board to develop an Annual Work Plan and associated Budget, including early identification and costing of all tournament and travel events.
  3. Establish and maintain strong professional relationships and communication with all coaches, the VWP Board of Directors, Provincial and National Sport Organizations (e.g. Manitoba Water Polo Association, Water Polo Canada, Sport Manitoba) and various stakeholders, including the City of Winnipeg, and other Clubs.

Training and Development

  1. Work with the VWP Board of Directors to develop a Strategic Plan for the recruitment and retention of athletes and coaches.
  2. Develop and implement coaching standards, coaching programs, and professional development pathways for all VWP coaches, ensuring adherence to any MWPA/WPC standards. Provide ongoing mentorship and establish individual performance and development goals for the Head Coaches.
  3. Develop a systematic and relevant training program for Competitive and Recreational Teams that includes short, intermediate, and long-term plans. Monitor and evaluate.
  4. Work with Head Coaches to establish athlete performance goals for the Recreation and Competitive Programming.
  5. Select and allocate external supplemental resources including, but not limited to, exercise physiology/training, nutrition, sport psychology.

Coordination and Communication

  1. Ensure quality of programming, clarity of communication, and adherence to Club, Manitoba Water Polo Association (MWPA) and Water Polo Canada (WPC) policies.
  2. Develop and maintain an inventory and database of certification/training requirements for all VWP coaches. Ensure that coaches have the appropriate certification requirements for all events (e.g. local training and game play; NCL tournaments; out-of-town travel).
  3. Conduct workshops to engage coaching teams and outline strategic framework and club requirements.
  4. Regularly monitor current trends in water polo and other sports to provide updates to coaches and the VWP Board of Directors.
  5. Establish a communication strategy with the Head Coaches to provide advice and support on coaching matters.
  6. Along with the Head Coaches, ensure Competitive Coordinator, Registrar, and Treasurer are engaged in a timely way for all competitions.
  7. Ensure the Club maintains a positive, inclusive, and safe sport environment that allows members and each athlete to feel supported in their pursuit of individual and team excellence.
  8. Provide relevant and timely information to the Club’s website, newsletter, and digital social media.

 

Candidate Qualifications

Essential:

  • Experience coaching youth sports.
  • Experience in supervising or leading a working group or team.
  • Experience establishing and maintaining relationships with amateur or professional sport organizations.
  • Possess exceptional interpersonal skills and be able to interact positively and build strong relationships with athletes, coaches, officials, parents, volunteers and MWPA/WPC representatives.
  • Experience in providing strategic advice and recommendations on program or policy issues.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Ability to mobilize people and create vision and strategy.
  • Comfort with different digital systems such as TeamSnap, RAMP, social media and/or other on-line platforms.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Asset:

  • Experience as a water polo athlete or coach with a National Team, NCAA, Provincial Team, Club or international experience.
  • University degree(s) or diploma in sports management, business, marketing, communications, leadership, or related field.
  • Training in conflict resolution/management.

Head Coach Women’s Program (part-time)

Head Coach Men’s Program (part-time)

Location: Winnipeg, Manitoba

Competitive annual salary of up to $15,000 (cnd)- commensurate with experience

Preferred start Date: August 15, 2022

Under the direction of the Vortex Water Polo (VWP) Technical Director (TD), these positions are responsible to assist in implementing VWPs Women’s and Men’s programming for both the recreational and competitive streams. Although the Head Coaches will be actively involved with all teams under their respective Program, the Head Coach will not necessarily be the primary coach for all teams. Support coaches form an important part of VWP’s coaching team.

Key Roles and Responsibilities of these positions include the following:

  • In collaboration with TD, lead and oversee all teams within the Women’s or Men’s VWP Program (Competitive and Recreation).
  • 10+ hours of weekly on-deck coaching working directly with Vortex athletes on technical and tactical skills.
  • Have a positive, organized, and compassionate coaching style that sets the tone.
  • Attend Vortex events, including local and out-of-province tournaments/games/training opportunities.
  • In collaboration with the TD, implement the Strategic Plan for the recruitment and retention of athletes and coaches.
  • Establish and implement training plans that provide appropriate technical, physical, and mental progressions.
  • Provide technical skill instruction to aid in the development of athletes and teams.
  • Prepare teams for games by developing strategies and conducting effective and organized practices.
  • Establish and monitor performance goals for teams and athletes.
  • Provide formal evaluations to athletes.
  • Work with the TD to select teams for competition.
  • Support athletes in pursuing Provincial and National team selections.
  • Provide athlete and family education on competitive athlete-pathway, build positive relationships with national high-performance programs and assist athletes with recruiting process.
  • Recruit Team Managers.
  • Work with the Competitive Coordinator to select chaperones for out-of-town travel and coordinate as required throughout the travel process.
  • Ensure Competitive Coordinator and chaperones are engaged in a timely way for all competitions and travel events.
  • Ensure effective communication between athletes and coaching teams for all practices, team events, tournaments, etc.
  • Work with TD to ensure all members of the coaching team have up-to-date certifications/ training requirements and follow all relevant VWP, MWPA and WPC policies.
  • Establish planning meetings with support coaches in advance of the season to determine coaching schedules, training/certification requirements and development opportunities.
  • Mentor, support and provide feedback to Support Coaches.

 

Candidate Qualifications

Essential:

  • Experience in water polo coaching. Successful candidates must possess a thorough knowledge of the rules, regulations, strategies, and techniques of water polo.
  • Minimum NCCP certification at the Competitive Coach level, or willingness to complete all Water Polo Canada and/or Manitoba Water Polo Association coaching requirements ASAP.
  • Experience in supervising or leading a working group or team.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Ability to mobilize and motivate people and possess strong leadership skills.
  • Comfort with different digital systems such as TeamSnap, RAMP, social media and/or other on-line platforms.
